Dee Snider Unveils New Album’s Latest Single, Video; Announces New Streaming, Signing Events

Courtesy: Napalm Records

Dee Snider debuted the latest single from his new album and its video this week.

Snider premiered his new single, ‘Down But Never Out’ and its video Friday. The song is the third single from Snider’s brand new album, Leave a Scar. Its premiere follows that of the album’s first two singles, ‘I Gotta Rock (Again)‘ and ‘Time To Choose.’ ‘Time To Choose’ features a guest appearance by Cannibal Corpse front man George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher.

The musical arrangement featred in ‘Down But Never Out’ immediately lends itself to comparison to the best works of Judas Priest and at the same time, some of today’s top new hard rock acts.  That all around heaviness can likely be credited at least in part to Snider working with Hatebreed front man Jamey Jasta on this record.  As a matter of fact, a close listen to the shouts in the chorus and the heavy “chunk” of the guitars at points does in fact point to Hatebreed as one of those noted current hard rock bands for comparison.  The intensity in the song’s arrangement works well to help translate the emotion in the song’s lyrical content.

The lyrical content presented in ‘Down But Not Out’ is a proudly defiant statement about perseverance, which again is a central theme to most of Hatebreed’s songs.

Snider talked about the song’s lyrical theme during a recent interview.

“I pride myself on the fact that throughout the decades, my music has always tried to not only push back against all oppressors (in this case Covid-19), but also lift people up and encourage them to fight back,” he said. “‘Down But Never Out’ is a perfect example of this ethos.”

The video for ‘Down But Not Out’ tells the story of a man who clearly is down on his luck. He has past due bills, his woman has thrown him out, and so he ends up trying his luck at the lottery. The result is left to wonder about, as it ends “To Be Continued.” Added to the mix is footage of Snider and his band mates performing live.

In other news, Snider recently announced a streaming event for audiences. Tickets for the event are available here. Tickets provide access to the event and related content for approximately one month. That extra content includes a streaming concert that Snider recorded June 12 in New York.

Additionally, Snider announced Friday, that he will take part in a special in-store signing event at 7 p.m. ET Aug. 17 at Looney Tunes Record Store in West Babylon. Tickets for the event are available here.

Matter Of Mind Premieres New Single, ‘Take It Back,’ Companion Video

Courtesy: Earshot Media

Independent rock band Matter of Mind premiered its latest single and video this week.

The band premiered its new single, ‘Take It Back‘ and its companion video Thursday. The song features a musical arrangement that blends elements of alt-rock and emo-punk for its body. The song barely tops the three minute mark, clocking in at approximately three minutes, five seconds, but the arrangement’s depth leaves listeners feeling fulfilled by its finale, which itself features a heavy but brief breakdown as the song’s final statement.

According to front man J Lambert Philip, the lyrical theme delivers a deeply introspective message.

“The song is very self-reflective whilst also acting like a mirror of someone else’s actions,” he said. “It almost portrays a feeling of realising everything you thought was right, was all wrong. Everything you know is wrong, and you’re right about it. It goes to show that yourself and others’ actions affect each other more than most probably realise.”

Added Philip, “It’s a bit of a deep cut for myself and hopefully one that people can latch on to, like the lyrics latched onto me. We’ve had this track under our belts for way over a year now, but now feels like the right time to release it after the incredibly difficult year or so the world has had.”

The video for ‘Take It Back’ is a relatively simple presentation. It features the band performing its new single on a darkened set. The set is illuminated only by a group of subtle backlights.

The Cocktail Slippers Releases First New Music In Almost A Decade

Courtesy: Wicked Cool Records

Rock band The Cocktail Slippers will release its fifth album late this summer.

The record, Shout It Out Loud, is scheduled for release Sept. 17 through Wicked Cool Records. Its release will mark the first time in seven years that the band has released a new album. In anticipation of its release, the band premiered the album’s lead single, ‘Be The One‘ and its video Thursday.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Be The One’ is a pop rock style presentation. It boasts a sound and stylistic approach that is easily comparable to works from The Go-Gos. It also incorporates more of a modern rock sensibility to make for more engagement and entertainment.

According to a statement from the band, the song’s lyrical theme is the central plot of so many rom-coms. It states of the song’s theme, it is about “That feeling when you meet someone and you instantly think, “This person is no good at all,” but then you get to know them and it turns out your first gut feeling was way off. “It started out wrong but it turned out right.” The song is actually about falling in love – head over heels – when you weren’t expecting that to happen at all.”

The video for ‘Be The One’ is simple and complex at the same time. As the press release announcing the debut of the song and video states, the video was captured in the band’s rehearsal space. It is a one-shot Steadicam shot that slows down vocalist “Hope” by 75 percent normal speed while her band mates interact at normal speed.

Courtesy: InsideOut Music

Leprous is giving audiences another preview of its next album.

The band premiered its new single, ‘The Silent Revolution’ Friday, along with its companion video. The song is the third from the band’s forthcoming album, Aphelion, which is scheduled for release Aug. 27 through InsideOut Music. Its premiere follows that of the album’s first two singles, ‘Running Low,’ and ‘Castaway Angels.’

The musical arrangement featured in ‘The Silent Revolution’ is in direct contrast to those featured in its predecessors. At the same time, the staccato notes on the guitar, the sharp, crisp sound from the drums, the keyboards and rich vocals are in their own way familiar for the band’s established audiences.

By comparison, the musical arrangement featured in ‘Running Low’ boasts a sort of blues rock influence while ‘Castaway Angels’ is an even more in-depth work. The song starts soft and introspective, but gradually builds to a strong climax in its finale that hits listeners so hard.

No information was provided about the lyrical theme in ‘The Silent Revolution’ in the press release announcing the song’s premiere. Though a rough interpretation from what can be deciphered hints at a deeply introspective message.

The video for ‘The Silent Revolution’ is a simple presentation. It features the band members in a studio setting that seems to mimic the look of a live stage. The new song plays over the video to give the video the look of the band performing live.

Sweet Teeth Debuts New Single, ‘Shattered Glass Face,’ Companion Video

Courtesy: MVD

Independent rock band Sweet Teeth kicked off the weekend with a new single and video.

The band premiered its new single, ‘Shattered Glass Face‘ and its companion video Friday. The song is the lead single from the band’s debut EP, Acid Rain. The seven-song record is available in the United States through MVD (Music Video Distributors) and various other labels in other regions.

‘Shattered Glass Face’ runs approximately 47 seconds (yes, less than a minute). In that very brief time, the song packs a powerful punch. The mix of the instrumentation and vocals gives the song a sound and stylistic approach that is just as comparable to works from Foo Fighters as from Dinosaur Jr. and Husker Du.

No information was provided in the press release about the lyrical theme featured in ‘Shattered Glass Face.’ Though the mention in the song of waking up in a room full of bottles and the plea to “Please wake me up” hints at perhaps a song having to do with alcoholism. That is as always just this critic’s own interpretation and should not be considered the only interpretation.

The video for ‘Shattered Glass Face’ is a black and white presentation. It features the band performing its new single in a studio setting.

Sorry Ghost Debuts New Single, ‘Swept Up’

Courtesy: Earshot Media

Independent pop punk band Sorry Ghost premiered its latest single this week.

The duo — Daniel Anton (vocals, bass), and Matthew Polito (guitar) — released its new single, ‘Swept Up‘ Thursday. The song features a musical arrangement that will appeal easily to any pop punk fan. that is proven through the vocal harmonies and familiar vocal delivery style.

No information was provided as to the song’s lyrical theme in the press release announcing the song’s premiere. However, a close listen infers that it centers on the all too familiar topic of a personal, romantic relationship between two people.

Anton was upbeat as he talked about the new single.

“We couldn’t be more excited for our latest single ‘Swept Up,’ he said “The song marks the beginning of an exciting new direction for our band – one featuring glittery guitars, sharper production, and unforgettable anthems.”

The premiere of ‘Swept Up’ comes a month after the band premiered its then latest single, ‘Kites.’ Its premiere was preceded by the premiere in May of yet another single from the band, ‘Like a Thief.’

Jeffrey Nothing Takes On Addiction In New Single, Video

Courtesy: TAG Publicity

Jeffrey Nothing is taking on drug addiction in his latest single and its companion video.

The former Mushroomhead singer debuted his new single, ‘The Outage’ and its companion video Friday. The single is available to stream and download through Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon. It features a musical arrangement that is immediately comparable to works that Jeffrey Nothing helped craft during his time with Mushroomhead, down to the rich vocals, guitars, and bass and drums.

Jeffrey Nothing talked about the song’s familiar lyrical theme in a prepared statement.

“So many trash their bodies and minds and feel they just get to wake up from whatever mistake they just made no matter what,” he said. “It is so heartbreaking to watch a generation be wiped out because they truly believe they are invincible. We are not. Risking oneself for that ever-elusive first high destroys far more than the singular self. Parents never want to outlive their children. You are not that invincible person who will beat any challenge, just because. Stop for one second and be that miracle baby again. Not the almost adult who crushed everyone’s dreams, all because you wanted to escape a temporary nightmare. Death is the end, not a new beginning. Ever.”

Jeffrey Nothing continued, “We all come with an expiration date. From our first breath, till our last, we are a miracle in motion; full of emotion, fears, and an air of invincibility. How we treat our fellow man and our life matters. Other than love, you sincerely can’t take it with you. Above is a place I pray to one day be, not a circle I put myself in as I traverse this lifetime. Freedom means everything. All complexes aside, we have no owners. Dream big and share your soul… I, for one, will be listening.”

Ian D. Sniesak also provided vocals to Jeffrey Nothing’s new single, and expanded on Jeffrey Nothing’s comments with his own thoughts.

“Life is full of hardships, challenges, tribulations… It can be difficult in the moments of pain to see through to the other side, that there’s a way to come out victorious,” he said. It can be easy to compromise or give in to something that offers a moment of relief; a temporary solution to a problem that might turn into a permanent consequence. It can be easy to think that you will remain in control but more often than not what we think we control ends up controlling us. Pain and trauma are the real gateway drugs and until we learn to face the pain and overcome we will continue the cycle of abuse, be it substance or other. If we don’t, addiction ends up being in control. It destroys what’s beautiful, and then dances and parades what remains around for all the world to see.

Sniesak continued, “It can be easy to become ensnared in the prisons of our mind. If we take a close look at ourselves in the midst of our addiction, it can seem as if we are suffocating, wrapped in the fake plastic of the lies we believe that have now led us to the predicament we are in.  Acknowledging there is a problem is the first step. Then we must fight, for our freedom and for our lives, one day at a time.”

While Jeffrey Nothing’s new single clearly takes on addiction — specifically drug addiction — the video does not exactly have a connection to the subject. The video is a very dark presentation. It features images of people with deformities, along with Jeffrey nothing and company in full theatrical costume as they perform the single. Just as with the song’s musical arrangement, the visuals are another direct throwback to the video styles that Mushroomhead did during his time with the band.

The Appeal For Styx’s New Album Will Not Collapse At Any Point

Courtesy: UMe

A wait of more than four years for new music from Styx officially came to an end last month when the band released its latest album, Crash of the Crown.  The 15-song album is the band’s 17th.  Now audiences can hear some of the music from the album live as the band has launched a tour in support of the record.  The tour features a stop Aug. 11 in Durham, North Carolina at the famed Durham Performing Arts Center.  The facility is one of so many shut down for the past year-plus as a result of the impact of the COVID-19, so this early entry in the center’s series is a big deal for fans in North Carolina.  To the same extent, Styx’s new album is its own big deal.  It is a record that continues to show why the band remains such a respected name in the rock (and music) community.  That is proven in part through its featured musical arrangements, which will be discussed shortly.  The lyrical themes featured alongside the record’s musical arrangements add their own appeal to the album.  They will be discussed a little later.  The record’s sequencing rounds out its most important elements and will also be discussed later.  Each item noted is important in its own way to the whole of the album.  All things considered, they make the album a work that will appeal not just to the band’s fans, but to rock fans in general.  Those fans in North Carolina will enjoy hearing much of the album next month, too when Styx comes to town at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Styx’s new album, Crash of the Crown is a strong new entry from the veteran rock band.  The record’s success is due in part to its featured musical arrangements.  The arrangements are important to note because of the approach that the band took to them.  The band’s familiar classic rock leanings are audible throughout the course of the record’s 43-minute run time.  At the same time, audiences also get quite a bit of prog-influence throughout the album alongside that classic rock sound.  The balance of the two genres is solid throughout the record, making for plenty of appeal in its own right.  Speaking specifically, the use of the keyboards, vocals, and guitars, makes the record’s arrangements comparable to works from the likes of Transatlantic, Spock’s Beard, and the Neal Morse Band.  Even with that in mind, it should be pointed out that while the comparisons are inescapable, the songs still boast their own identity from one to the next.  That ability of the band to create arrangements whose sounds and stylistic approaches are so familiar but still their own is just part of what makes the album work.  Its lyrical themes add their own appeal to its presentation.

The lyrical themes that accompany the album’s musical arrangements are important to note because they are just as accessible as the album’s musical content.  From one song to the next, the themes are essentially commentaries on various topics.  They are also delivered in fashions that make it easy to understand them.  Case in point is the lyrical theme featured in ‘Common Ground.’  Simply put, this song is a call to unity.  It starts out sounding like an all too familiar piece about relationships as it states, “It was just a fleeting moment, on a long lost night/We both were so determined that our way was right/Now the days of our confusion have no end in sight/Can we ever find our way back/From that long lost night?/ Once, we all believed/When we were young/That our dreams could rise/Were those all lies?/But it’s just so hard to see/Through each other’s eyes/ It was just a fleeting moment/Did our dreams take flight?/Can we ever find our way back/From the long lost night?”  However, the chorus counters that interpretation as it comes right out and states, “When we get together on common ground/Then no one will ever come and take us down.”  Here is a clear statement of unity, telling people they need to…well…come together.  It is a theme that is anything but new in this case, but is just as welcome as in any other act’s songs.  It is a theme that will always be relevant.

On another note, ‘Save Us From Ourselves’ is another example of the importance of the album’s lyrical themes.  In the case of this song, the theme comes across as a commentary about the state of the world.  This is clearly inferred in the song’s lead verse, which states, “It was the same day in another time/I felt your pain and you felt mine/And all that we tried and all of our tricks/Still couldn’t help what couldn’t be fixed/Who’s gonna save us from ourselves this time?”  The song’s chorus continues that message, stating, “One nation, indivisible/Heads in the sand/’Ccause we weren’t invisible/Say your prayers/We could all use a miracle now/To save us from ourselves.”  The song’s second verse continues in similar fashion, making mention of the “Demonstrations/appropriations/More frustrations/Tugging at your sleeve/Peace and love still has the power/Don’t wait until your final hour to believe/I said/With all that we’ve tried/And all of our tricks/Still could not help/What couldn’t be fixed/Can anyone save us from ourselves this time?”  Once more, this is a familiar indictment of everything going on and the people causing it all.  It is yet another familiar theme and even being so familiar, is just as welcome here as in any other case.

The whole thing closes out with yet another familiar lyrical theme in ‘Stream.’  This song delivers a message of hope even with all of the negativity swirling around the world.  That is made clear right from the song’s outset with the lines, “Strangers leaving footprints in the snow/The day is coming and everybody knows/Pressure’s building/Something’s gonna blow/The sun is rising/The rooster’s gonna crow.”  That final statement about the sun and rooster hints at the old adage that it’s always darkest before the dawn.  It continues, “Please don’t wake me from this sweet dream/Floating on a stream/Sunshine beaming down on my face/Staring into space.”  This is someone who is lost in positive thought.  It is a reminder to listeners that things can and will get better, even as bad as they have been and are.  It is yet another example of the importance of the album’s lyrical themes.  What’s more, considering its placement in the album, it also plays into the last of the record’s most important elements, its sequencing.

As noted in the songs addressed here, there is a lot of familiar commentary on some very hot button topics.  They are addressed throughout the course of the album before audiences are finally reminded at the record’s end that there is a light and that things will get better.  This shows a deliberate approach to the songs’ sequencing in regards to their lyrical content.  The sequencing also takes the songs’ musical arrangements into full account.  As noted already, this album is composed of 15 songs that span interestingly only 43 minutes.  Considering the number of songs, that number would normally account for a much longer run time for most records.  So to have such a relatively manageable run time across that many songs is interesting.  When audiences listen to the songs, the shortest being approximately 38-seconds and the longest clocking in at exactly four minutes, that run time becomes more understandable.  What’s more, the energy in each arrangement ensures listeners’ maintained engagement and entertainment.  That stability in the songs’ energies and the standard run times among the songs is really what accounts for the relatively short, but not too brief run time.  It makes the album that much more appealing being that it shows such thought that went into the sequencing in this case, too.  All things considered, the sequencing shows in its own way, it is just as important to the success of Crash of the Crown as the album’s musical and lyrical content.  When all three elements are considered together, they make this album another positive offering from Styx the continues to show why this band remains one of rock’s elite acts.

Styx’s recently released album, Crash of the Crown, is a presentation that will appeal widely among the band’s established audiences and to more casual listeners.  That is due in part to its featured musical arrangements.  The arrangements expertly balance the band’s familiar classic rock leanings with a distinct prog influence to make them unique and appealing in their own right.  The album’s lyrical themes are also important to its presentation because of their familiarity and accessibility.  The sequencing of that content puts the final touch to the album’s presentation.  That is because it takes everything into account with the album’s content.  It ensures that content is placed properly to ensure the album flows solidly from one song to the next.  Each item examined is important in its own way to the whole of the album.  All things considered, they make the album a positive new offering from one of rock’s elite acts.  Crash of the Crown is available now.  More information on the album is available along with all of the band’s latest news at:

Another Lost Year Returns; Announces New Re-Issues, Live Dates

Another Lost Year is ending its hiatus of more than a year and a half.

The announcement was made Thursday through a news release. In celebration of the return, the band has announced it will re-issue its 2016 album Alien Architect as well as its three-part EP series, The Revolution. Pre-orders for the Alien Architect are open. Each re-issue will come through Godsize Records.

In anticipation of the two forthcoming re-issues, Another Lost Year premiered the video for its single, ‘Trigger Finger‘ July 23. The video features many of the band’s past members performing the single in an audition style setup as the song plays over.

The musical arrangement featured in the song is a catchy, driving rock song. It is centered on its guitar and vocals. The addition of the bass and drums to the mix makes the whole a song that is another engaging and entertaining fit for any mainstream rock radio programmer’s daily playlist.

No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the press release announcing the band’s return and re-issues.

In other news, Another Lost Year has announced a brief series of live dates in support of its re-issues. The schedule is slated to launch Sept. 16 in Des Moines, IA and to run through Nov. 5 in Dubuque, IA with performances in cities, such as Fort Wayne, IN; Denver, CO and Lombard, IL.
