KK’s Priest Debuts New Album’s Third Single, Video

Courtesy: Napalm Records

KKs Priest gave audiences yet another preview of its forthcoming album, The Sinner Rides Again, this week as the countdown continues to the album’s release.

The preview came Friday in the form of the new single, ‘Strike of the Viper‘ and the song’s companion video. ‘Strike of the Viper’ is the third single from the record, which is scheduled for release Sept. 29 through Napalm Records. The band premiered the album’s latest single, ‘Reap The Whirlwind‘ and its companion video last month. Its premiere was preceded by that of the record’s lead single, ‘One More Shot at Glory‘ and the song’s companion video, also last month.

As with its predecessors, the new single once again puts the band’s power metal prowess on full display. The comparison to music from Judas Priest and Saxon are once again as evident as ever throughout thanks to the instrumentation and vocals.

Band founder and guitarist KK Downing hinted in a brief statement that the song’s lyrical theme hints at a topic of mental health.

“Beware – ‘Strike Of The Viper’ is now here…,” Downing said. “These demons can sting and bite their way into your brain, what world are they from?”

The video for the band’s new single is a familiar style presentation. It crosses live footage of the band on stage with footage of the band on a sound stage meant to resemble the band in a live setting. The song plays over the visualization as it plays out.

In other news, the band launched a tour in support of its forthcoming album early last month. A series of live dates with Burning Witches and Paul Di’Anno is scheduled for October. The upcoming dates are noted below along with a festival date in December and a series of dates in March 2024.

Jaguero Debuts New EP’s Second Single

Courtesy: Earshot Media

Independent punk rock band Jaguero unveiled the latest single from its forthcoming EP, New Love, this week.

The band debuted its new single, ‘All I Think About‘ Thursday. The band premiered the EP’s lead single/title track, ‘New Love‘ last month. The musical arrangement featured in the new single is a catchy 90s indie punk style composition that as with the record’s lead single, also boasts some post grunge leaning.

According to a statement from the band, the song’s lyrical theme is a deeply existential discussion on acceptance that we all must grow up one day.

“This song is a reflection on the challenges of adult life and the lingering influence of our adolescence as we grapple with the complexities of growing up, moving on and finding our place in the world,” the statement reads in part. “This single tells of the experiences that shaped us during our adolescence, acknowledging the struggles and uncertainties of that time, while also emphasizing the sense of possibility and excitement that comes with youth and discovery.

The statement continues, “The lyrics show two vivid images: our more childlike side, which does not want to grow up and faces everything head-on, and our adult side, which tries to forget the child that will always be inside us. This song is a dive into our experience, emphasizing the importance of embracing our past while looking to the future with hope and optimism. It speaks to anyone who has ever felt the weight of adult responsibilities while still cherishing the memories and dreams of their youth.”

Kurt Baker Debuts New Album’s Third Single

Courtesy: Wicked Cool Records

Singer-songwriter Kurt Baker offered up another preview of his forthcoming album, Rock ‘N’ Roll Club, this week.

The preview came Friday in the form of his new single, ‘She Don’t Wanna Be Alone.’ The song is the third single from the forthcoming album, which is scheduled for release Sept. 29 through Wicked Cool Records. Baker debuted the album’s second single, its title track, and the song’s video last month. The record’s lead single, ‘Anchors Up‘ and its video premiered in May.

Baker talked about the musical arrangement in his new single in a prepared statement.

“’She Don’t Wanna Be Alone’ is a song that I think a lot of my old school fans will enjoy,” Baker said. “John Lennon & the Beatles being a big influence. Wyatt and I co-wrote this song and it was one of those collaborations when everything just comes together so quickly! We threw a Mellotron as another nod to the Beatles – but I also I love how it sounds on “Go Let It Out” by Oasis, which probably was most definitely influenced by the Beatles. Basically, let’s face it, the Beatles are the greatest band in the world and “Rock N Roll Club” is my greatest record yet so boom goes the dynamite!”

No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the news release announcing the song’s premiere. From what can be interpreted in the lyrics and song title, it centers on a woman who is looking for love. That is just this critic’s interpretation.

In other news, Kurt Baker is in the midst of a series of live dates in support of his new album.

The next of his planned live dates is Sept. 29 in Boston, MA. The concert (and another to follow Sept. 30) is an album release performance. Baker has also announced a series of live dates in Japan Oct. 22-28. Another concert is planned for Nov. 24 in Portland, ME.

Courtesy: Wicked Cool Records

The Dollyrots premiered the official video for its new single, ‘Night Owl’ this week.

The song is the lead single/title track from the band’s forthcoming album, Night Owl, which is scheduled for release Oct. 13 through Wicked Cool Records. The premiere of the new video Thursday came less than a month after the band premiered the song’s lyric video.

The new video features the trio performing its new single on a sound stage that boasts a wall of lights and light bars behind and around the band respectively. The look is something akin to certain videos created for bands in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Singer/bassist Kelly Ogden talked about the new video treatment in a prepared statement.

“We cut the ‘Night Owl’ video in Los Angeles.” Ogden said. “The streets of the city are the place where we spent so many reckless nights running from rock show to rock show, cutting our teeth in the music scene. We’re a different kind of Night Owl now, making music & allowing creativity to happen after we put the kids to sleep.”

In other news, The Dollyrots has also announced a series of tour dates with Tsunami Bomb and Smoking Popes. The lone date with Smoking Popes is scheduled for Aug. 30 in Hamden, CT. Danger Mouse & Jemini Th e Gifted One Unveil New Album’s Second Single

Rap duo Danger Mouse and Jemini The Gifted One released its sophomore album, Born Again Friday.

The album’s release, through Lex Records, was preceded Thursday by the debut of the album’s second single, ‘Born Again.’ The pair premiered the record’s lead single, ‘Brooklyn Basquiat‘ early this month.

The musical arrangement featured in the new single is a very light composition highlighted by what sounds like a harp. The laid back groove from the drums adds even more to the arrangement’s engagement and entertainment. The whole really gives the arrangement a throwback, vintage funk and hip-hop vibe very much in the vein of Common.

According to information provided in a news release announcing the single’s release, the song’s lyrical theme is an uplifting message centering on “overcoming adversity.”

Of Mice & Men Premieres New Album’s Second Single, Video

Courtesy: SharpTone Records

Of Mice & Men gave audiences another preview of its next album, Tether, this week.

The band debuted the album’s second single, ‘Castaway‘ and the song’s companion video Tuesday. The premiere came almost a month after the band debuted the album’s lead single, ‘Warpaint‘ and its video.

Where the musical arrangement in ‘Warpaint’ takes the band in a heavy, almost industrial metal direction, the band’s latest single is more of a familiar style metalcore work from the veteran band. The change in sound and style is notable throughout the song.

According to a statement from the band, the song’s lyrical theme is a discussion on the connections with those who are going through difficult situations but who essentially refuse help.

“‘Castaway’ is about longing for connection with the people in our lives who tend to distance themselves when dealing with hardships, and how our inability to help them often feels like we’re frozen in time,” the statement reads.

The song’s theme is illustrated through the video, which features a young woman making her way through an abandoned cityscape as the song plays over the visualization. The woman is obviously facing a variety of thoughts and emotions as she makes her way through the city, at one point, flipping off a camera that follows her.

Saul’s Second LP Is Anything But The End For The Band

Courtesy: Spinefarm Records

Late last month, up-and-coming hard rock outfit Saul released its sophomore album, This Is It…The End of Everything, ending a nearly three year wait for the record.  The 13-song album is a presentation that fits in well among this year’s current crop of new hard rock and metal albums, as is proven in part through its featured musical arrangements.  They will be addressed shortly.  The lyrical themes that accompany the album’s musical arrangements make for their own collective appeal here and will be examined a little later.  The record’s production rounds out its most important elements and will also be discussed later.  Each item noted is important in its own way to the whole of the record’s presentation.  All things considered This Is It…The End of Everything proves itself to be a largely successful second outing for Saul and gives at least some hope for the band’s future.

This Is It…The End Of Everything, the sophomore album from Saul, is a presentation that ensures audiences it is in itself hardly the end of things for the up-and-coming hard rock act.  Released July 28 through Spinefarm Records, the album shows at least part of its strength through its featured musical arrangements.  The arrangements in question exhibit a blend of melodic hard rock and aggro-rock from one song to another.  Audiences got an early taste of that approach through the album’s trio of singles, ‘Jack and Jill,’ ‘A Million Miles’ and ‘Tooth & Nail.’  The sound and style exhibited in those songs (and through the rest of the album’s entries) is easily comparable to works from the likes of fellow up-and-coming hard rock act Another Day Dawns and others of that ilk.  One could even argue that in songs, such as ‘More of the Same,’ and ‘Jack and Jill,’ the arrangements are just as easily comparable to works from the likes of Breaking Benjamin, what with its brooding sound and style.  To that end, the arrangements featured here are compositions that would be easy fits for any active rock radio programmer’s playlists.  That is because they would ensure listeners’ maintained engagement and entertainment from one to the next.

The musical arrangements featured throughout Saul’s new 48-minute album are just part of what ensures the record’s appeal.  The lyrical themes that accompany said content makes for its own share of interest.  That is because the topics addressed through the themes are fully relatable and delivered in a fashion that makes them just as accessible.  ‘A Million Miles,’ which is one of the album’s singles, takes on the familiar topic of social media and how it has actually caused more separation among people even though it “connects” us.  Front man Blake Bedsaul said of the matter when the band released the single, “As a society, we’re so glued to our phones and social media.  When we finally got out of quarantine, we personally needed to take a mental break from it.  If you think about it, we don’t even have to talk anymore since communication happens online.”  That instant communication has caused so much separation even within our own homes.  The song’s subject going so far as to say, “I feel a million miles away” makes clear how social media has led to so many of us feeling so distant and disconnected because people pay so much more attention to – as Bedsaul noted – our screens than one another.  Saul is hardly the only band to take on the negative impact of social media in society today, but even with that in mind, the message is still just as welcome as ever here.

Along with the role of social media, the band also takes on the equally familiar topic of broken relationships and in different ways throughout the album.  One of the hardest hitting moments in which the theme is addressed comes early in the album’s run in the form of ‘New Low.’  In the case of this song, it is delivered seemingly from the vantage point of someone who has dealt with another person who is clearly toxic in his or her personality to the point that there is no more trying.  This is inferred as the subject states late in the song, “I draw the line/Won’t watch you die/Do you think this is fair/So pull the pin/It’s the end/I won’t stop fighting to care.”  This line is short and simple but speaks volumes.  It comes across as the subject telling the other person he or she has reached that breaking point.  He or she will not stop trying to care, but the point at which that other person has reached has caused the main subject to say enough is enough.  Everyone knows or has known someone like that self-destructive personality and has, by connection, had to deal with said personality.  To that end, it is another relatable and accessible theme that is sure to keep listeners engaged and entertained.

The matter of broken relationships in terms of more personal connections is also addressed, even more sharply in ‘Jack and Jill.’  In the case here, the story does not exactly end well for the pair after Jill treats Jack anything but well, divorcing him and kicking him out after their relationship soured.  Jack got more than even, becoming homicidal as a result of what Jill did to him.  The story is a pretty harsh tale that is rarely told in the bigger picture of songs about broken relationships.  To that end, it is sure to resonate and be remembered by audiences in its own right.  When this theme is considered along with the others examined here and along with those featured in the album’s other songs, the whole therein shows clearly why the record’s lyrical themes are just as important to the album’s appeal as the record’s musical arrangements.

The musical arrangements and lyrical themes featured throughout This Is It…The End of Everything form a relatively solid foundation for the album.  They are not the only key elements in this record, though.  The album’s production rounds out its most important elements.  As noted already, the arrangements featured throughout the album are heavy works that blend some very heavy aggro-rock and melodic hard rock leanings from one to the next.  That means that there is a lot of energy and sound in each arrangement.  Thanks to those behind the boards, the instrumentation and vocals were expertly balanced in each song, ensuring that sound and energy gives audiences the fullest possible impact in each work.  The richness in each arrangement in turn immerses listeners just as much as the record’s content.  The result therein is a positive aesthetic that builds on the impact of said content.  All things considered the album overall proves to be a largely successful new offering from Saul that proves this record is anything but the end for Saul, but only the next chapter in the band’s life.

This Is It…The End Of Everything is hardly the end for Saul.  Rather, the band’s sophomore album is a strong new chapter in the band’s life.  That is proven in part through the album’s musical arrangements.  The arrangements are of note because the way in which they blend melodic hard rock and aggro-rock leanings from one to the next.  The expert balance in those elements makes each arrangement an easy fit for any active rock radio programmer’s play list.  The lyrical themes featured throughout the album are just as positive in that they are relatable and presented in a fully accessible fashion.  The record’s production puts the finishing touch to the whole by ensuring a positive aesthetic to the whole.  Each item examined here is important in its own way to the whole of the album’s presentation.  All things considered they make This Is It…The End Of Everything another welcome addition to this year’s field of new hard rock and metal albums.

This Is It…The End of Everything is available now through Spinefarm Records.  More information on the album is available along with all of Saul’s latest news at:

Douye Offers Intriguing Takes On Jazz Standards In Her New Covers Collection

Courtesy: Rhombus Records/Groove Note

World music and jazz are about as far from one another as two music genres can possibly get.  That goes without saying.  World music is music, literally from around the world.  It is music that introduces audiences to the people and cultures of other nations. The other is a genre that is purely American.  So, in combining the two genres one might not think the two would work very well together.   However, up-and-coming jazz vocalist Douye’s (pronounced DOE-yay) recently released jazz covers collection, The Golden Sekere, proves that somehow it is possible to successfully blend the two genres.  Released July 7 through Rhombus Records and Groove Note, the new compilation (Douye’s third jazz compilation and fifth overall record) proves the two worlds (no pun intended) can coexist, offering up a number of well-known and lesser-known jazz standards in one setting.  Among the most notable of the more well-known works featured here is the cover of the timeless ‘Fly Me To The Moon.’  Douye’s take on the song will be discussed shortly.  ‘Green Dolphin Street’ stands out among the lesser-known standards featured in this record and will be addressed a little later.  ‘I’m Confessin’ That I Love You’ is yet another intriguing of the collection’s more notable standards.  It will also be examined later.  Each song noted here plays its own important part in the bigger picture of the record’s presentation.  When they are considered alongside the rest of the record’s entries, the whole makes this set another intriguing addition to this year’s field of new compilation records.

The Golden Sekere, the latest compilation record from jazz singer Douye, is an intriguing addition to this year’s field of new covers sets.  It holds its own in this year’s field of new compilation records (and more specifically jazz covers records) through the songs and styles featured therein.  One of the most notable of the covers featured in this compilation is a quite well-known work, ‘Fly Me To The Moon.’  Originally composed in 1954 by Bart Howard, it really rocketed to fame (terrible pun fully intended) a decade later when Frank Sinatra took it on.  Sinatra’s rendition has since then become the gold standard for Howard’s song.  The big band style work has such an infectious groove established through the balance of its woodwinds and especially brass.  The drums form the foundation of its body while “The Chairman” offers up such a rich vocal performance.  Douye’s take on the song meanwhile gives the song a whole new identity.  She makes the song more of a smooth, relaxed work.  Gone are the big horn flourishes and woodwinds.  Gone are the equally strong drum performances.  The drums in this case are more of a supportive role while the horns and winds are replaced by a gentle guitar line.  The addition of the piano line to the mix really gives this rendition the vibe of something one might expect from the likes of Diana Krall.  That is meant in a positive way.  The whole is a unique take on an already well-known song that is certain to earn its own recognition.

Well-known standards are not the only works that Douye features in her new compilation.  She also included a handful of lesser-known standards to help flesh out the record.  Among the more notable of those lesser-known standards is ‘Green Dolphin Street.’  Originally composed in 1947 by Bronislaw Kaper and Ned Washington for the movie by the same name, it first rose to fame through the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra.  Others, such as Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, and Vince Guaraldi have also tackled the song throughout the decades.  The rendition made famous by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra features Bill Lawrence handling vocal duties and is one of those works that one might expect to have heard performed in the upscale clubs of the age.  It is a slow, relaxed song to which audiences could easily dance as the orchestra performed the song in its space right next to the dance floor.  It clocks in at just under three minutes in length (two minutes ,51 seconds to be exact).  By comparison, Douye’s take on the song takes it in a completely different direction.  She and her fellow performers use a samba style approach in their take on the song, complete with the use of a familiar Latin style rhythm on the drums and piano, horns and even the subtle use of a pair of claves.  It gives the song a whole new identity that is quite separate from any rendition of the song previously crafted.  Perhaps the closest comparison that can be made is to that performed by Vaughan.  Hers is something of a big band style take that includes some distinct Ella Fitzgerald-esque scatting.  This rendition does not have that scatting at all, but the general vibe is much the same even as the style is different.  To that end, it makes Douye’s take on the song unique in its own right and just as interesting an addition to the record as any of the other covers featured in the collection.

Getting back to the more familiar songs, Douye’s take of ‘I’m Confessin’ That I Love You’ is another notable addition to the record.  Originally composed in 1929 under the title ‘Lookin’ For Another Sweetie’ by Chris Smith and Sterling Grant, the song has enjoyed great success in the more than nine decades that have passed since its initial publication.  That is thanks to covers from the likes of Thelonious Monk, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Lester Young, and Dean Martin, just to name a handful of famed acts who have taken on the song.  Each has given his or her own touch to the song over that span.  Monk’s take is something of a lighter take while many of the other takes are much more subdued but still evoke such sweet emotion.  That is so intriguing considering that this is a song about someone afraid that his or her loved one is going to leave him or her.  One would expect the song’s mood to be more melancholic.  It makes for so much interest.  Douye’s rendition is little different from those noted takes.  It is just as relaxed as those versions of the song, complete with a subtle jazz guitar arrangement and ever so subtle use of brushes on the snare.  Douye’s own controlled vocals add to the interest here, ensuring even more, the engagement and entertainment in the song.  It is sure to interest any jazz aficionado.  When it is considered alongside the other covers examined here and with the rest of the record’s entries, the whole makes The Golden Sekere all the more worth hearing and another interesting addition to this year’s field of new covers collections.

The Golden Sekere, the latest studio recording from up-and-coming jazz vocalist Douye, is a presentation that many jazz fans will find interesting.  That is due to its featured covers and the manner in which they are handled.  The record features a number of familiar and some lesser-known jazz standards for its body.  The unique takes on the standards – many of which incorporate musical elements from her native Nigeria – give the songs identities that stand out among the so many other covers that are out there.  All three of the songs examined here serve well to exhibit the various approaches she has taken to the songs.  When they are considered with the other covers – such as the uniquely funk-infused take of ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing,’ the World music-infused take of ‘Cherokee’ and the very subdued take of The Very Thought of You’ – the whole makes the record’s overall presentation quite the unique presentation that holds its own well among this year’s current crop of covers compilations.

The Cocktail Slippers Debuts Video For Its Latest Single, ‘Good Love’

Courtesy: Wicked Cool Records

The Cocktail Slippers debuted the video for its latest single this week.

The band unveiled the video for its new single, ‘Good Love‘ Monday. The video features the quintet, dressed somewhat like The Spice Girls, walking down a street, singing its new single as the song plays over the clearly tongue-in-cheek spoof of the noted pop stars and their look.

The band talked about the video’s treatment in a prepared statement:

“What do you get when you put 5 girls in a small van with no AC, drive from Oslo to Copenhagen for a gig and have 3 hours to kill before the show? GOOD LOVE,” the statement reads.

According to information provided about the premiere of the new video, the song’s lyrical theme presents a message about “love and empowerment. That delves into the story of a girl who seemingly had it all. Yet, despite all her possessions, she learns that what she truly really needs is something more profound- genuine and good love.”

The song’s musical arrangement is a catchy, poppy, up-beat composition whose vocal harmonies, guitar work and even rhythm section make for so much engagement and entertainment.
